About | Dundee Research Interest Group

The Dundee Research Interest Group was established by Parkinson’s UK on the 25th January 2018.

Research Interest Groups are part of the Research Support Network of Parkinson’s UK.

People join the Research Support Network because they are driven to find a cure and in the interim to find better treatment.  They also want to learn more about research and receive opportunities to participate in, and have their say in shaping, Parkinson’s research.

The key role of the Research Support Network is to:

  • Increase awareness and understanding of research
  • Encourage participation in research
  • Encourage and support patient and public involvement in shaping research

The role of the Research Interest Group is to establish a ‘local’ activity base for the Research Support Network. In our case ‘local’ broadly means Tayside and Fife but we very much welcome people from outside this area too.

What we do?

All our activity is focused on research through providing information and communication about research, helping people to better understand research and encouraging ‘participation’.

This may include organising activities to explain research or to discuss research proposals.  It could also involve sharing experiences such as acting as a PPI in research projects (Patient and Public Involvement) and actual participation in research etc.

We bring like-minded people together who want to pursue their interest in research.  While Research Interest Groups are not Parkinson’s Support Groups, as such, we do of course support anybody affected by Parkinson’s and this website provides links to the Support Networks.

Our Aims:

To help provide research information and explain what it means

To raise awareness of research

To establish partnerships with research institutes and researchers

To participate in research

To provide a forum to discuss findings of research

Examples may include:

Events around…

  • Parkinson’s  – how to manage the symptoms, dystonia, sleep loss, etc?
  • how the gut affects Parkinson’s, how it affects the brain, how diet affects the gut, etc?
  • why Parkinson’s is so different from one person to the next?
  • Medication & Treatments – now and in the future, new drugs, new treatments, generic drugs, etc.
  • Research – what can and can’t be done, the limitations of financial support, etc.

Participation

  • To find out more about clinical trials and how to participate.
  • How can we help?
